Sono passati più di sessant'anni da quando è stato scritto, ma continuiamo a vederlo, Holden Caufield, con quell'aria scocciata, insofferente alle ipocrisie e al conformismo, lui e tutto quello che gli è cascato addosso dal giorno in cui lasciò l'Istituto Pencey con una bocciatura in tasca e nessuna voglia di farlo sapere ai suoi. La trama è tutta qui, narrata da quella voce spiccia e senza fronzoli. Ma sono i suoi pensieri, il suo umore rabbioso, ad andare in scena. Perché è arrabbiato Holden? Poiché non lo si sa con precisione, ciascuno vi ha letto la propria rabbia, ha assunto il protagonista a "exemplum vitae", e ciò ne ha decretato l'immenso successo che dura tuttora.

Ne capisco la fama, libro che punta i piedi e racconta un'identità forte ma altrettanto sensibile di un giovane uomo buttato nel mondo, un mondo più grande di lui che lo spaventa e lo affascina. Mi è piaciuto tanto, e non posso non raccomandarlo.
The way the protagonist has been written makes me want to claw my eyes out. Why is every page of the book filled with excruciatingly crass detail about how he hates everything and nothing else of substance?
Last week, I watched a documentary about the elusive author J.D. Salinger. A number of med talked about the reclusive author down to tell them how much they loved his writing, and how much they identified with Holden Caulfield in Catcher In The Rye. One mentioned that when he cornered the author and told him how amazing the book was and how J.D. really SPOKE to him through his writing. The way the interview subject talked, Salinger can upset by this and quite rude.
I thought I'd read Catcher to see what the big deal was, and maybe it wasn't just a book that spoke to lonely alienated boys looking for something to blame. Reading this, however, I feel like I'm paging through the mind of an 8chan incel. Maybe it's not such a big wonder why lone gunmen adore this book.

Reading this, however, I feel like I'm paging through the mind of an 8chan incel. Maybe it's not such a big wonder why lone gunmen adore this book.
Holden isn't special, and he's no rebel. Rebels DO something, but Holden only whines about things. Everything is someone else's fault. His room mate at school did this or that and caused him to get distracted. People who like something are stupid for liking it. Women are ugly and stupid because they aren't with him.
Holden is a sad little boy who is alienated and self-absorbed. Sure, he's sixteen and a loser, but he's hardly rebelling against anything. He sees only the faults in others and sees only (imagined) good in himself. Even when he sounds a bit self-deprecating, the core of his problems is someone else.
Holden might be a nihilist, but he's no rebel.
If Holden was Salinger inserting himself into the main character, then maybe the author's self seclusion was a service to humanity.

Romanzo di formazione scorrevole e piuttosto significativo, ma bisogna sforzarsi di passare oltre a certe cose - traduzione in primis, che risulta spesso e volentieri forzata (proprio per come è fatto il testo originale, non perché sia una cattiva traduzione)

Because the representation of this human experience was quite well done in a perspetive of one person only and what she thinks. It kept me almost wanting to talk to Holden and ask him a few questions. Or not... Because he was dealing with the world and everyone that passed by this would understand. Its not that I am moved. I am delighted with the painting of a personality through his eyes. And I am other eyes standing outside and judjing or being benevolent. I almost passively watch this story.
I think that what made me feel 'sort of depressed' about it in the end was the ending itself. I don't know what to feel abou it. Was it to logical, inevitable, bad, ok, realist, far-fetched,...? I can't decide. But it didn't felt right.
