Ambitious young scientist Victor Frankenstein succeeds in creating a living being, then, horrified by his countenance, frightens him away. Wandering in search of companionship, the being is spurned by all and learns to hate and kill. In a confrontation with his maker, he threatens a rampage of destruction unless Frankenstein creates a mate for him.

surprisingly enjoyable!

I thought this was going to be a more detailed version of the pop culture bit we always see: "it's alive!" etc. but that action doesn't even take place "on screen"; the story is much more about what a creator (parent, or god) owes those they create. I enjoyed it much more than I expected, and thought the writing was excellent.

Beautifully written, Frankenstein opens very well. Towards the latter half the plot turns into Victor being sad and everything happens just as you'd expect it to, which lost my interest a little.
