Sophie Blackall writes and illustrates this book about life in a lighthouse. The story of the keeper throughout different seasons of his life and the changes they brought is told through the narration of the routines that must be kept in a lighthouse. The illustrations made with watercolors and chinese ink are gorgeous, they represent movement using geometrical elements that captivate the eye. Additionally, the use of colors and the placement of the text are a perfect complement for the story. This 2019 Caldecott medal winner for its illustrations is a great book for k-3 students to learn about the intention of the author/illustrator when choosing the elements that will captivate the reader. Its pages filled with details transport you to the story as if you were living it. It also shows an important change when technology took over the keeper’s job, which is a great starting point for a conversation with 2-3 grade students about the implications of these types of changes nowadays.
